Root Canal Treatment and Endodontic Assessment

Root canal treatment is planned to remove infected or damaged tissue from inside a tooth and help the tooth continue to function. At Dental Care Clinic, each case is assessed through a clinical examination and, when required, diagnostic imaging.

When may a root canal assessment be needed?

Spontaneous toothache, pain that increases at night, lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, pain on chewing, swelling on the gum or findings around the root on an X-ray may indicate that the pulp and surrounding tissues should be assessed.

Because these signs can have several causes, a decision is not based on symptoms alone. Pulp tests, periodontal findings, existing restorations and radiographic findings are considered together.

How is treatment planned?

The tooth is isolated appropriately; the root canal system is cleaned, shaped and disinfected before being filled with suitable materials. The restoration that protects the tooth above the gum is also planned as part of treatment.

The number of visits can vary according to the condition of the infection, canal anatomy, previous procedures and the restorative needs of the tooth.

What does an endodontic assessment include?

Endodontics concerns the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of diseases of the dental pulp and tissues around the root. The nature of the pain, pulp response, tenderness on chewing, periodontal findings and relevant radiographs are interpreted together.

An operating microscope may assist in teeth with complex anatomy, previous treatment or areas that require detailed visualisation.

Why is follow-up important?

The result is not judged only on the day the procedure is completed. A sound, well-sealed restoration, clinical reviews and radiographic follow-up when indicated are important for long-term oral health.

  • Diagnosis based on clinical and imaging findings
  • Magnification and illumination when appropriate
  • Restoration and follow-up considered as part of the overall plan
